AtticFoil® vs Metalized Film/Mylar® Type Products - There's A BIG Difference In Quality!
What's the difference between AtticFoil™ Radiant Barrier and Other Radiant Barrier Products?
Mylar is a metalized film (this is the same product used in a chip bag and inflatable balloons) and it is not designed to last a long time. Over time mylar gets brittle and falls apart. Pure aluminum won't break down over time because it's a different material than mylar - it's just pure aluminum!
Watch to see Ed demonstrate the unique properties of a pure aluminum radiant barrier that set it apart from cheaper Mylar based products. Order a sample of our premium radiant barrier products on our website: www.AtticFoil.com

Using AtticFoil As A Baffle To Keep Insulation Out Of Soffit Vents - New 2024

A "baffle" vent is typically a piece of styrofoam that sits on your soffit vent and protects it from insulation falling onto the vent and blocking your intake air flow. However it's more common than not to see insulation baffles installed incorrectly. This means your attic air flow is compromised and can't pull cool air into the attic. Proof That Foil Radiant Barriers Don't Work Directly Under Roofing Shingles - MUST Have an Air Space

Proof That Foil Radiant Barriers Don't Work Directly Under Roofing Shingles - MUST Have an Air Space
It doesn't work with asphalt shingle roof tiles because you need the airgap for it to work, right?
Correct. Here is a way you CAN make it work with a shingle roof: www.radiantbarrierguru.com/combining-radiant-barrier-with-spray-foam-insulation/
I have foam spray insulation in my attic currently. Would stapling a foil barrier to the top of the attic be any benefit or detriment to the foam effectiveness? The north Texas heat is out pacing the central air with some rooms reaching 80 degrees with the thermostat on 74.
If you have foam on the floor of your attic and it's ventilated, then installing www.AtticFoil.com on the bottom of the roof will work great just like any other attic application. If you have a non-vented / foam closed attic then there would not be much benefit putting it to the "inside" of the foam.
How much do you charge per sq.feet of attic foil. My home is 2, 200 sq Ft.
www.AtticFoil.com material is about .17/sq. ft. Pricing is on the website here: atticfoil.com/index.php/products/48-wide-double-sided-atticfoil-radiant-barrier-foil-perforated/
How does UV get through metal sheeting? Asking for a friend 😂
Never said that. Said radiant heat from the metal and UV from the interior lights.
@@AtticFoil ohh ok the up from the interior lights. That makes more sense
Excellent training videos. Nice job
I am in north Georgia. I don’t have the ability to get to all of my rafters in the ceiling in my attic. If I do the floor method, will it still keep the heat away enough? Even though the ceiling method might be better. Is there there still some benefit to putting it on the floor?
Installing www.AtticFoil.com has a cumulative effect. The more coverage, the better. So, do as much as you can with whatever method works. Take a look at the Hybrid Method here: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/hybrid-install/
Does laying it across insulation will it not heat the shingles
Short answer is no. Roof temperature info here: atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-learn-about-radiant-barrier/myth-or-truth-radiant-barrier-damages-roof-shingles/
Can they work together?
Maybe? Depends what you do. Contact us at www.AtticFoil.com
If the Bluetex is in contact with the metal tubing for securing it, doesn't that surface still cause a line of cold air/moisture build up, when trying to heat it in the winter?
Yes, you have to connect www.BlueTexInsualation.com to something. But, it's like a can Koozie. The foam insulation should keep the interior surface above the dew point to eliminate condensation.
Thank you! EXCELLENT video and explanations!!! Previously I thought that the radiant barrier only worked by installing (stapling) on the underside of the roof. So I avoided a whole section of the roof because I was not able to get into that area to install on the roof/top underside.
I have a finished attic that is too hot in the summer. Do any of you have any suggestions for what I could do for a finished attic? (Two bedrooms, hallway, and small bathroom) I have central air, but no return vents in top floor. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Here is an old article I wrote covering how to handle hot rooms: www.radiantbarrierguru.com/hot-rooms-in-my-house---when-all-else-fails---part-2/
👍
Would using this along side a 3/4 foam board between your perlins be benifical or just use the foil no foam board?
Only if the attic is NON-Vented would this help. Otherwise it's kinda like comparing a thick umbrella to a thin umbrella. No additional benefit. Typically, in a vented attic, I'd install www.RoofingFoil.com on the roof deck and then more attic insulation on the FLOOR of the attic where it will actually help.
In South Carolina what’s best way to install? Staple to underside of roof plywood or on the face of the roof joists like shown in the video. I saw one video saying in southern states it should be on underside of roofing plywood
You would never staple www.AtticFoil.com to the bottom of the plywood. Installing on the bottom of the rafters will reflect heat from the deck AND work off the emissivity quality where it's actually touching the bottom of the rafters. Do this method and don't overthink it. atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/staple-up-installation/
I have blown in insulation in my attic. I would like a product that I could apply to the underside of the roof so I can either eliminate some, or all, of that insulation. I want to fully re-examine my duct work that my HVAC system uses but with 4ft of blown in insulation, that makes it pretty hard. Do you guys have a solution for that?
That's exactly what www.AtticFoil.com is for. It's like a cloudy day for your roof. This means less heat comes into the home reducing the load on the AC unit and helping it keep up.
I'm sorry if you've already answered this but to do you lay the perforated barrier WITH radiant barrier or instead of it? Basically is it one or the other or is it in conjunction with? Thanks
For ANY attic installation always use the www.AtticFoil.com WITH perforations.
can you drywall over this product?
It depends on the application. Sounds like you are looking for this info: atticfoil.com/index.php/applications/cathedral-ceilings-hotmixed-climates/
Thank you. This was exactly what I was looking for.
Can you put this under the board on the inside of the roof then technically you have an air space in the rafters ?
Yes, here is the video for that process. ruclips.net/video/uEh28E99arg/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I've done a lot of insulation but never radiant barrier. This was really informative and well explained. Thanks guys it ups my game a lot.
Thanks, if you are a contractor please contact us at www.AtticFoil.com for contractor pricing.
Good demonstration of you get what you pay for. Hopefully sales are brisk during this Solar Maximum. Have you tried multiple layers with air gaps between? Wondering if that would help reduce solar heat gain in any meaningful way.
Multiple layers work pretty well if the air between them is "dead" air. As for a typical attic? Since the first layer of www.AtticFoil.com reflects 97% adding additional layers has very little additional benefit. Kind of like having two umbrellas.
I leave the attic door open in the garage and the garage door open a crack. Then it creates a nice draft into attic and comes out the vents
Appreciate the video. Have some questions on best process. Looking to install attic foil in my home AND increase the insulation. Currently have cheap, thin fiberglass bats. Looking to add cellulose due to the better properties versus blown in fiberglass. However, I see cellulose makes a lot of dust when installing. I read/watched online that if the radiant barrier surface gets dusty, it diminishes its properties. So, since you recommend using the radient barrier to block the soffits and create that draft area behind the barrier and then one would install insulation. how do I install the radiant barrier and then the cellulose without diminishing the barrier properties due to cellulose dusting? Thanks
Very little dust will actually end up on top of the www.AtticFoil.com when installing cellulose. And, no matter how much dust you get on top the bottom side will always work due to the emissivity quality. More info here: ruclips.net/video/zUHYiAn1oUc/видео.html
I put this in the attic of my garage and it made it much cooler up there. This stuff is great. Very tough almost indestructible. I was surpised how easy it was to put up. I had some left over and I left it outside beside my shed. That was ten years ago in the sun and rain. Still looks good.
Thanks for the comments about how good www.AtticFoil.com is. Yes, it will last many year in the direct sun compared to the Mylar type products.
Will radiant barrier foil affect the shingles or void GAF warrantees? I think some manufacturers require specific ventilation.
No shingle manufacturer voids warranty over a radiant barrier. More info here: atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-learn-about-radiant-barrier/myth-or-truth-radiant-barrier-damages-roof-shingles/
I purchased 1500sqf roll and will be installing this weekend. I can’t wait!
We appreciate your business at www.AtticFoil.com Please post a review here or on Google. Thanks!
That's great for summer, what about winter?
www.AtticFoil.com is mostly to reduce Summer heat gain. Think of it as an umbrella compared to a jacket. If you live where it's sunny a lot of the year, it's a huge benefit.
@@AtticFoil I live in Massachusetts and my house is really exposed to the sun , no trees. I am thinking of installing this type of radiant barrier because of the summer heat. But my concern is the heat gain that I will lose in the cold winter months or am I incorrect in thinking that?
There is actually very little useable heat from the sun on the roof in the winter for several reasons. First, the sun is low, second the days are short and since heat always goes from hot to cold, the colder air will "suck" the heat out pretty quick. Overall, you will come out ahead installing www.AtticFoil.com in your attic even in a colder area.
@@AtticFoil Thank you so much for the info, I'm no expert but that all sounds right to me, thank you 👍
Amazing, to-the-point videos, guys. Thank you so much. I'm reinsulating a finished attic and this information is priceless!!
I'm re-insulating a finished attic in an old house. Where would I put the radiant barrier? In other words, fiberglass batts against the roof, then radiant barrier? Or radiant barrier against the roof, then fiberglass batts?
Sounds like you have a cathedral ceiling. Info here: atticfoil.com/index.php/applications/cathedral-ceilings-hotmixed-climates/
Hi, I just had a shed delivered today and it has the radiant barrier on the inside of the walls. I'm happy about that but I was planning to insulate and put up drywall to make it a nicer studio space. Will it be ok to do that? Or is it better to only use drywall and no fiberglass roll insulation in between? Thanks!
It depends on whether you plan on heating/cooling the shed. If not, then no insulation. Using insulation is like building a refrigerator but not putting in a compressor. If you are going to heat/cool do this: atticfoil.com/index.php/applications/inside-exterior-walls-hotmixed-climates/
Question: Can this be installed on an unvented (hot) roof? Cathedral ceilings, r-30 fiberglass batts, no ridge vent or soffit vents.
Absolutely! Non vented attics are great! Whether you use fiberglass or foam. It's like building a refrigerator. Now, let'd put the refrigerator in the shade!!!! It will effective double the r-value when the sun is shining. Use www.RoofingFoil.com as your first line of defensed against radiant heat and the fiberglass as your second line of defense against conductive heat. We have many home builders use it with non-vented attics in combination with metal roofs.

Great test
I live in a hot tropical country. If I am going to use an insulated standing seam metal roof (with built-in 1 inch polyurethane foam) for my house, do I still need to install a radiant barrier (with an air gap) on the battens?
First, if you are using foam on/below the metal roof, I assume you are doing a closed/non-vented attic?? If not, there no reason to put foam on the deck. This is like holding a jacket over your head...why?? But, Yes, if possible you ALWAYS want to install www.RoofingFoil.com Radiant Barrier can (effectively) double the r-value of your insulation (when the sun is shining) by dropping the external surface temperature.
I saw one advertised with R-7 on amazon, so, I knew something was amiss. Dog leashes I bought for a 90 lb dog from amazon, would not hold a 30 lb dog, an electrical cord bought on amazon melted, etc, etc. amazon has no controls. No check. No Accountability.
The reason I support this is what I did in a simple mobile home years ago,, I was poor and decided to put aluminum foil over cardboard and put in almost all windows , the foil rejected the sunlight's heat and the cardboard was insulation , it was like a ice box in there and reduced electric bill substantially
Thanks, yes www.AtticFoil.com works in windows too!
Does Attic Foil cause an increase in roof temperature and humidity due to the lack of air flow?
No. More info and video here: atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-learn-about-radiant-barrier/myth-or-truth-radiant-barrier-damages-roof-shingles/
Hi guys, which product would be the best for me? I'm in Seattle, own a three story townhouse (tall and skinny like a chimney), built in 2013 with lots of insulation on the attic floor. Lots of shade from trees on the west side. May through September here are 70-85 degrees (with usually a week or so touching 90), 60-70% humidity. The third floor can get killer hot. Thanks!
Depends on your instal method: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/best-install-method/ For staple up use the Original AtticFoil if laying out over insulation use the SuperPerf product. Does this help?
@@AtticFoil Yes, thank you! For my townhouse described above, do you recommend stapling to the rafters, or laying over insulation? Or is the effect essentially the same, it's just a matter of install preference?
I had a ridge vent installed when I had my roof replaced. Does this mean I can have the electric fan removed? The roofer didn’t say anything about it. Thanks.
I would just turn it off. Won't cause any issues unless it's running. If running it will pull air in the ridge vent instead of the soffits. Be sure to also install www.AtticFoil.com
@@AtticFoil OK, thanks.
I think I'm still going to do this, I think this foil product would be cheaper than the Reflectix or whatever that commercial product is that is the dual layer Mylar with foam in the middle. A consultant guy at hardware store was trying to convince me I didn't need to spend the money on a reflecting product because I had positive forced air ventilation and could just put down Styrofoam sheets on tops of rooms to isolate them from attic heat. Although we did just have a new roof put on and roofer added several new deck vents we never had before and that has helped amazingly with cooling up there. But there still is some issues when it gets really intensely hot in summer or deepest cold of winter. The attic spaces aren't gigantic, so I think I could do this foiling without it costing a fortune. I need to do a rough estimate of square feet of coverage and get a quote for how much rolls I'd need.
Great! Please contact us at atticfoil.com/index.php/contact-us/ We will help you with the measurements.
I like the attic foil idea. I'm putting in a gable fan in the 1914 Craftsman bungalo on th east side. There's a window with screen on the west side and a louvered vent in the peak on the north side. I have a great deal of large Oak and Catulpa providing good shade except for the middle of he day. Sunny days with no wind need some help too pull that hot air out. The foil will be interesting to see about knocking down the radiant heat. One convcern would be reflecting that radiant heat back up to the underside of the plywood decking, underlayment and shingles and causing excess heating of the roofing materials.
Don't worry about the roof temperature. Only goes up a few degrees when www.AtticFoil.com is installed. Complete info plus thermal image video here: atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-learn-about-radiant-barrier/myth-or-truth-radiant-barrier-damages-roof-shingles/
@@AtticFoil Thanks. I'll check it out. I'm rewiring my whole house right now and working in the attic. I'll grab some and put it up and see what my new FLIR picks up. I've got a 15 deg slope facing due south that gets direct sun between 11a and 1p this time of year.
Very true about those soffit vent holes being cut too small. A subcontractor tried to do that to me. I complained and the contractor made them do it right. If you bought a house with soffit vents, check to see if the holes are cut correctly.
Thanks for the comment. You are 100% right. At www.AtticFoil.com we've seen it countless times.
my house dosent have a soffit nor a ridge vent. Am i still able to add this without getting any hot moisture on the wood behind? Meaning for a home that does not have a ridge vent where does the hot air go since you mentioned it goes to the top.
Yes, it will work. You still want to leave gaps in the www.AtticFoil.com at the top/bottoms etc. You WANT air to flow freely through the attic as though the foil is not even there. Even if you have gable vents the hot air will move towards the top of the attic, like water heading towards a drain. The exhaust vents don't need to be at the very top to be effective.
@@AtticFoil i dont have any ridge or soffit vents just old style gable vents. Putting this wouldnt lead to leaving moisture behind right? Is the RB breathable? I just dont want moisture to build up from hot air and such
If you install www.AtticFoil.com with gaps at the top/bottom there is NO place to trap any moisture. Air will flow freely through the attic. Don't overthink this. And yes, the AtticFoil is microperforated so it is breathable.
@@AtticFoil but my attic has no fresh air that comes in. its a old style house that dosent have any built in soffits or ridge vents.
@@AtticFoil I'm glad I found this comment. I was.....overthinking it. haha
You confirmed what my roofing contractor said. I was thinking fans and he suggested ridge vents.
the overlapping ins wrong. if there are any roof leaks, the water will drip into the ceiling, to fix this overlap the uper insulation onto the lower, above it, so it creates an ability for any moisture to flow from top tobottom and out the wall,
Actually the LAST thing you want is for any water from a roof leak to go to the bottom and into the wall. With this method of installing www.AtticFoil.com any roof leak WILL drip within 4 ft of the leak and you will actually SEE it on the ceiling WAY before you discover the walls are wet/damaged.
does these AtticFoil's Radiant Barrier can be usefull in cold winter season ?
Yes, you would want to use the www.AtticFoil.comm SuperPerf version and la directly on top of the attic insulation. Instructions here: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/best-install-method/
